How It Works
Choose a photo
A front-facing photo against a plain light wall, taken by someone else from a few steps away. JPEG, PNG or WebP.
Fit the head
Choose the size, then drag the photo and use Zoom. Where the official head size is known, keep the head between the two ovals.
Print at 100 percent
Create the PDF and print it at Actual size on photo paper. Measure one photo with a ruler before you cut.
What the State Department Asks For
- One color photo for a paper application, taken in the last 6 months.
- Head and shoulders centered, the head fully visible and 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm) from the chin to the top of the head.
- Plain white or off-white background without shadows; eyeglasses removed.
- The original photo, without filters or digital changes, printed on matte or glossy photo-quality paper.
A friend or family member may take the photo, according to the Department of State. Online renewals use a digital photo instead of a print. Source: U.S. Department of State, Passport Photos, checked October 31, 2026.
